So far we're Cats - 2 , Day - 0.

[two objects knocked over and 1 broken; 1 two-legs dragged out of bed far earlier than her 1am bedtime would justify]

Now, of course, the little darlings are curled up contentedly watching me type, like that's all they ever wanted in this world.

Furry bastards.

On the other hand, I am going to a Champagne tasting tonight. So yay.

[oh how far I've come from the girl who didn't like Champagne. Apparently, like red wines, it's that I don't like cheap sparkling wines. At all. Yes, I really can taste a difference between the $10 bottle, the $50 bottle, and the $150 bottle*. Alas. Thankfully, the $50 bottle tastes much the same as the $90 bottle, so I know where to shop]

*don't ask me about the $300-or-thereabouts bottle of vintage Roederer Cristal Rosé. It will never happen again. Damnit.

Take: one long bootlace

Add: two felines, one at either end, arranged so that they can't see each other.

Result: cutest-freaking-ever game of tug-of war.

Meanwhile, other than tormenting playing with the kittehs, I have made breakfast, done laundry, finished and sent off the author proofs for THE HUNTED, and, um... not much else. Right. To it, then.

For SFWA members: Dr. Lawrence posts about the new Nebula process. If you don't already know, you might want to take a look. And hey, both BLOOD FROM STONE and FLESH AND FIRE are eligible! M'just sayin...

Saturday opened with a brunch gathering of what I refer to as the North City Irregulars -- industry folk who live in the northern tip of NYC (as opposed to all those Downtown/Brooklyn hipsters). I was indulgent and had waffles. With syrup! We met at a local diner, and Gossip was had. Then I went home and clobbered some work (and cleaning) before heading out to the SFSNNJs "Face the Fiction" which had invited Sue Lange, Susan Wright and myself to come talk about Book View Cafe (www.bookviewcafe.com), after which Sue and Susan fled for their respective beds, while I went along with the attendees to their local diner.

You can take the girl out of Jersey, you just can't get her out of the diners.

Special thanks to Bill W, for getting me back home safe, if not quite sound.... (yeah, I went thud the moment I hit the elevator)

Also had the very...interesting experience of Boomerang being introduced to a new person, and having my usually affectionate boycat (referred to as "Mr Gregarious" by someone who knows him well) not only be uneasy when first introduced, but when encouraged to make nice, sniff the stranger's hand and then back up. Not just a backward movement, but five or six distinct steps in the direction of Away.

Hrmmm.

(Pandora, as usual, was Madame Not Appearing in this Movie)

Sunday is laundry, cleaning, cooking, revisions. Productive as hell, but boring to blog about.

"Solar-powered cat powers down for the autumnal equinox."

[info]rovanda, please claim your choice of prize!

bjmuntain's "Coffee! I need coffee!" and [info]feed_your_muse's "This mai calendar. U not allowd to go wai on dis date, or dis date. If you leaves me, my depreshun I will show you it. See? Iz depressed." tied for second place, with exactly one vote each less than [info]rovanda. Guys, send me your mailing addresses and I'll send an Official Vineart War travel corkscrew for your efforts.

five things, mid-week

[info]suricattus
1. It's Jackie Kessler's fault... she started talking about the remake of Jaws, and asked "what's next?" My answer: A remake of The Sound of Music. With rappers.

"The hills, the hills, oh yeah the hills they are a-Live, they're alive, come on, y'all say it 'cause you know it, uh-huh, the hills are a-Live with music..."

I'd say I'm sorry but I'm really not. [I thought about going hardcore but there are delicate flowers and underage kids who read this blog...]

2. Haynes to publish Wallace & Gromit manuals!

3. "An overwhelming majority of publishers believe that e-books should be less expensive than the printed version, but only 15% support Amazon.com flat-rate of $9.99 on front-list titles". Hrm. I'd like to see it at least 25% cheaper, but people really do need to understand that e-books yes really do cost $ to produce and, perhaps more to the point, are considered along with all other editions in the overall costing of a book. Discuss in comments.

4. I am taking Senior Feline to the vet this morning. She used to be pretty good about that...not so much anymore. Pray for me...

5. After that, I will be off to see Bruuuuuce at Giants Stadium, where it is reported he will perform the entirely of "Born to Run." I have sort of mixed feelings about this, but the fact that this means I will get "Meeting Across the River" makes me a very very very happy camper. [trivia point: B2R was released on my birthday]. I may or may not Tweet the concert, depending on how crazy it gets and how cold my hands are...

The winner of last week's Tuesday Feline Picspam Caption Contest was [info]treize64, with "I know you were just writing something and Imma let you finish, but that scene you wrote and your editor made you cut was, like, one of the best scenes of all time. Just sayin'," proving that a percentage of this blog's readers are pop culture addicts. Not really all that much of a surprise...

Congrats, treize64! Drop an e-mail to LAG[at]lauraannegilman[dot]net and let me know which book you choose (and where to send it)

And since it's Tuesday, and Boomer was obliging enough to pose last night, let's give it another go...

Cosmic Cat Durablock scratching post? Every household should have one.

Actually, every household should have one per cat. The one I brought home yesterday has become a hotly-contested item, second only to possession of mom's lap.

I can see another trip to the pet store this weekend. Hey, if it makes them happy and keeps them out of the book closet... (they love the boxes books get shipped in, too)

And note to self: when closing linen closet door, make sure there is no cat inside. She'll only sleep so long, and a locked-in kitten is a LOUD kitten....
