Voting has closed on the feline picspam caption contest, and the winner is...

"Solar-powered cat powers down for the autumnal equinox."

[info]rovanda, please claim your choice of prize!

bjmuntain's "Coffee! I need coffee!" and [info]feed_your_muse's "This mai calendar. U not allowd to go wai on dis date, or dis date. If you leaves me, my depreshun I will show you it. See? Iz depressed." tied for second place, with exactly one vote each less than [info]rovanda. Guys, send me your mailing addresses and I'll send an Official Vineart War travel corkscrew for your efforts.

And today's feline picspam, already captioned:

five things, mid-week
citron presse
[info]suricattus
1. It's Jackie Kessler's fault... she started talking about the remake of Jaws, and asked "what's next?" My answer: A remake of The Sound of Music. With rappers.

"The hills, the hills, oh yeah the hills they are a-Live, they're alive, come on, y'all say it 'cause you know it, uh-huh, the hills are a-Live with music..."

I'd say I'm sorry but I'm really not. [I thought about going hardcore but there are delicate flowers and underage kids who read this blog...]

2. Haynes to publish Wallace & Gromit manuals!

3. "An overwhelming majority of publishers believe that e-books should be less expensive than the printed version, but only 15% support Amazon.com flat-rate of $9.99 on front-list titles". Hrm. I'd like to see it at least 25% cheaper, but people really do need to understand that e-books yes really do cost $ to produce and, perhaps more to the point, are considered along with all other editions in the overall costing of a book. Discuss in comments.

4. I am taking Senior Feline to the vet this morning. She used to be pretty good about that...not so much anymore. Pray for me...

5. After that, I will be off to see Bruuuuuce at Giants Stadium, where it is reported he will perform the entirely of "Born to Run." I have sort of mixed feelings about this, but the fact that this means I will get "Meeting Across the River" makes me a very very very happy camper. [trivia point: B2R was released on my birthday]. I may or may not Tweet the concert, depending on how crazy it gets and how cold my hands are...

and a bonus! 6th thing, to remind you that the voting is open for the feline picspam caption contest, and the open thread is still running, downstream...

The winner of last week's Tuesday Feline Picspam Caption Contest was [info]treize64, with "I know you were just writing something and Imma let you finish, but that scene you wrote and your editor made you cut was, like, one of the best scenes of all time. Just sayin'," proving that a percentage of this blog's readers are pop culture addicts. Not really all that much of a surprise...

Congrats, treize64! Drop an e-mail to LAG[at]lauraannegilman[dot]net and let me know which book you choose (and where to send it)

And since it's Tuesday, and Boomer was obliging enough to pose last night, let's give it another go...

Cosmic Cat Durablock scratching post? Every household should have one.

Actually, every household should have one per cat. The one I brought home yesterday has become a hotly-contested item, second only to possession of mom's lap.

I can see another trip to the pet store this weekend. Hey, if it makes them happy and keeps them out of the book closet... (they love the boxes books get shipped in, too)

And note to self: when closing linen closet door, make sure there is no cat inside. She'll only sleep so long, and a locked-in kitten is a LOUD kitten....

And under the "bah, cats" heading -- I woke up at 5:45 this morning with Boomer making noises like a smoke detector (small, high pitched meows) that normally indicate that he wants attention but Big Bad Pandora won't let him in the bedrooom (he sits just outside the door and waits until I invite him in, thereby supporting my contention that he's actually a Labrador in a cat suit). But when I did tell him to come in, Pandora got into the act and there was Noise and I decided whatthehell, it's almost time, I'll feed them. So I hauled out, fed them in their separate corners (because Boomer is convinced Pandora's Getting Something Better and will stare at her until she abandons her food so he can go eat it). I, still being wiped out, go back to bed for an hour. I wake up two hours later (oops) with Pandora under the covers sleeeping on my thigh, and Boomer above the covers sleeping at my knee, both perfectly content and happy and why no mom, we neeeeeever fight! That would be wrong. Uh-huh, says momma twolegs, not at all convinced but soothed by happy purring snores anyway.

Off today [after word war] to work in the Park (it's gorgeous out today) and spend time with Mei-mei, whose main Thing is wanting to eat dried leaves and be BFF with dogs seven times her size.....

Y'know, I talk all the time here about my critters. Tell me about yours! Past, present, it's all good....

various and sundry in search of coffee....
meerkat coffee
[info]suricattus
And lo, the meerkat is home (earlier than expected due to Family Things) from the usual fantabulous family gathering, only to discover two piteously hungry kittens who had been without fresh food or water for 36 hours, because their cat-sitter took "please feed them Friday" to mean "it's okay it you don't show up until after 9pm, assuming you were going to show up at all." The meerkat is...not pleased.

However, the MIDNIGHT CRAVINGS contest continues until midnight tonight and you have until midnight Sunday to enter the "Plausibility" contest to win your choice of the first three books in the Retrievers series in mass market (new contest starts on Monday)!

Slightly related: if you were to happen to eavesdrop on us yesterday afternoon:

Me: "I have to e-mail them later. They're talking shapeshifters but I don't have a were, I have an incubus." *pause* "Not many people can say that in the course of a business conversation."

My mom: O_O

And totally unrelated: For those who were part of the "what is Socialism" discussion early (or have just wondered where we're going with this regulated economy) you might want to check out the article in this weekend's New York Times: Weekend Opinionator: A Different Sort of Red America

[as an aside: is there such a thing as "today's newspaper" when you read it online, with the access to yesterday's articles and tomorrow's breaking news updates?]

or, In Which Once Again Boomerang Earns his Call-name of "Boomer-You-Idiot."

The Universe clearly heard me telling my folks this evening that cats were so much easier to live with than dogs. I had just decided to turn in for the evening when I heard a rustling noise, like the sound a cat makes when they're into something they shouldn't.

"Boomer, cut it out!" I called, making a not-unsupported guess who was responsible.

There was some more rustling. Then an unhappy meow.

Then a Very Unhappy Yowl.

"Mom? Wasn't there supposed to be a sink there?"

He was deeply relieved when I opened the cabinet doors and let him out of that Awful Place.

The truly amusing thing was that not three minutes later Pandora decided to investigate as well.... but she was smart/agile enough to leap out the way she'd fallen in.

Cats. Oy.

evilmeer: Pandora is staring at the workmen. She ventured into the kitchen to sniff around when they took a break, but ran when they came back. Who knew she'd be the brave one?
ArwenR: Heh. When we had Simba and Wuss together, it was funny...when we moved, each time, she came out within less than an hour of all the upheaval being over, made perimeter checks, and was fine. Simba wouldn't come out of hiding for days.
evilmeer: Boycats are scardeycats
ArwenR: yep!
evilmeer: she really is watching them Most Intently. from a safe distance, natch

on Sunday, there was work _and_ play

[info]suricattus
For those who wonder, it was Pandora the Duchess who was kitty insane at a painful hour this morning (6 am 'new time' but not according to my very tired brain).

Mostly I don't mind the time change for the same reason I don't get jet-lagged in most instances -- my sense of time is fluid to begin with, and so long as I've had a few hours of sleep I can function normally. But the first few mornings of getting out of bed when it's still dark were always painful. Thankfully, in my non-commuting life, I don't have to! Freelancing FTW!

(actually, waking up before the sun is out always flashes me back to summer vacations and going fishing with my dad. So it's a pleasant memory, and makes me crave Nature's Valley granola bars.)

And, in a rare moment of indulging my slothful ways, I then went back to bed until 10am. Then it was off to a Sekrit Hideaway sans internet connection to workworkwork until it was time to head over to Dovetail for dinner.

You must understand: I've wanted to go to this restaurant since it first opened to rave reviews. Alas, it was not to be, for I am a freelancer of only occasional paychecks, until I was IM'd out of the blue and informed that we had reservations to celebrate the fact that Flesh & Fire was finally into production.

I'm good with that. :-)

beware: here be foodie talk )

And now, despite many things pending I need to respond to (yes, you), I need to go fall over and digest for the next 12 hours....
